Purpose & Vision
What sets this clinic apart from others is its’ purpose, to provide an opportunity for athletes, parents, and coaches to build a personal relationship with a college coach and build a positive support system of Hawaii wrestlers embarking on the same journey. This is an important step to achieve before setting off on their first solo journey to adulthood.
When athletes arrive at college, there is a huge culture shock, from weather, to food, as well as speech. Let alone, the added challenges of living on your own for the first time, learning new challenging material in class, coupled with trying to balance athletics, such as 2 team practices a day, eating in a cafeteria, and frequently traveling for competition. Some find all this exciting, but for a lot of Hawaii wrestlers, they feel uncomfortable, and come back home.
As a Hawaii wrestler who successfully navigated the college world, and now a Hawaii coach for 12 years, I have witnessed this happen to many wrestlers in our community.
I BELIEVE THIS EVENT IS ONE PART OF THE SOLUTION.
In order to help our wrestlers go to college and finish, they need a support system.
One part of that system is other local wrestlers. Wrestlers from Hawaii will be going through the same culture shock together. They can lean on each other when others don’t understand why you are wearing slippers in the snow, or stare at you blankly when you say, “Shoots! We go!” or think spam musubi stinks and is disgusting. If we send our wrestlers where other Hawai’i wrestlers are, they will develop a common bond that will help them navigate the new world.
The most important part of the support system is the leaders and mentors that shape their lives. Their relationship with their college coach is going to have a huge impact on their emotions, value, and self-worth. They will go from the classroom, full of new challenges, into a wrestling room filled with new challenges as well. Where once they were one of the best kids on the team, they will be going into a room where they are possibly average. Their “toughest partner back home,” is now every single person in the room. So how the coach treats them, and coaches them through this experience is an important part of helping our kids be successful at the next level.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT COACH IS AS IMPORTANT AS CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL.
That’s what makes this event so special. We bring college coaches here to Hawaii, so you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars going there. The coaches get to experience Hawai’i, our wrestling community, and our wrestlers, to gain a better understanding of where our kids are coming from and build a relationship with them, their parents, and their coaches, along with their friends who wrestle too.
BECAUSE THAT’S THE LOCAL WAY, BRINGING PEOPLE INTO OUR OHANA. HANAI.
